Record Cleaning Solution FAQs
Yes, the cleaning fluid is effective with optical media including CDs, DVDs and Blu-rays, as well as vinyl records.
No. The solution contains alcohol which, while safe for vinyl, can damage shellac (78rpm) records. Please use an alcohol-free cleaning solution for shellac.
This is normally caused by dirt being disturbed but not fully removed during cleaning. The dirt is deposited on your stylus, decreasing audio quality. Clean your stylus and you should notice an immediate improvement.
We also recommend cleaning records more than once if this happens regularly, particularly with aged or heavily soiled records. If a record is very heavily soiled, a powered cleaner such as an ultrasonic or vacuum wash may be needed - there is a limit to what a manual cleaning process can achieve.
Note: the solution contains alcohol and should not be used on shellac records.<\/p>
Yes. Wash the cloth by hand or in a washing machine without fabric conditioner, as conditioner can damage the cloth. The cloth's performance will reduce over time but should last for several washes, broadly in line with the solution running out (approximately 500 LPs).
We sell packs of replacement cleaning cloths if you need more ahead of replacing the solution.
We use isopropanol because it is a safe, effective and practical cleaning agent. It dries very quickly, meaning records take less time to dry and are less likely to be re-sleeved wet.
We also use a surfactant to cut surface tension and aid the cleaning process. The main downside is that it cannot be used on shellac records.
Yes, we use distilled water in our cleaning solution.
The ingredients and their purpose:
- Deionised water: clean, ultra-purified, residue-free base.
- Isopropanol: breaks down dirt and oil, and evaporates quickly.
- DMDMH: keeps the solution fresh and prevents microbial growth.
No. Acetate records (also known as lacquer discs) are extremely sensitive to solvents such as isopropanol, which is present in our solution. Using it can cause permanent damage.
For acetate records, we recommend dry cleaning with a high-quality record brush or, if necessary, gently wiping with a very slightly dampened cloth using distilled water only. Always avoid commercial cleaning solutions unless they are specifically formulated for use on acetate or lacquer records.
Our cleaning solution contains alcohol and is not safe for shellac (78rpm) records. Please use an alcohol-free cleaning solution from another brand. Several customers have reported good results with Spin Clean's solution, though we cannot guarantee the performance of third-party products.
